Incredible Hulk #15 Books Reviews

This is the conclusion to the 2011 Incredible Hulk series, and I have to say, it was one wild ride, truly living up to the title "Incredible". It's one of my favorite Hulk stories of all time, and the breadth of craziness that has been created on paper has truly been astonishing (and satisfying). My only complaint is that the final showdown between Hulk and Doom never actually happens, and we have to try to be satisfied with him simply smashing up a bunch of Doombots. I'm not sure why that decision was reached, particularly when this is the end of this particular run. Doom's motives are also never fully explained, leaving a rather noticeable gap. However, I loved this series overall, and the highlight of this particular issue was the surprisingly funny dialogue between the Doombots as they pondered the existential dilemma and cracked wise with one another.
It does have more good than bad, but the weaknesses of Aaron’s run shines through here. For starters, the art is once again somewhat sketchy and inconsistent. The lack of a consistent artist has been something hampering Aaron’s run since Marc Silvestri left way back in issue #3. The story just hasn’t had a steady feel to it, and the rough art probably turned off a lot of readers as well.

Aaron’s run has also suffered from a weak supporting cast. The Mad Squad consists of characters that we apparently are supposed to care about, but they haven’t shown any depth to speak of. The entire team is snarky and perverse but lacks any real substance. Similarly, we don’t have a real villain here – it’s just Doombots, so the grand confrontation between the Hulk and Doctor Doom never materializes. Aaron did a great job on the Banner/Hulk dynamic in his run, but what has separated his Hulk stories from classics told by the likes of Bill Mantlo, Greg Pak, and Peter David is the lack of an intriguing supporting cast. Each of those aforementioned writers gave the cast time to develop and breathe on their own. To be fair, though, each of those writers also got to enjoy more than 15 issues before their comic got canceled.

As a whole, Jason Aaron’s Hulk run is pretty good. It’s got a lot of fun moments and a few weak spots, but what really sells is is the Hulk/Banner dynamic. By flipping the formula so Banner was the monster and Hulk to guy trying to suppress him, Aaron gave us a lot of interesting situations.
